Rochester, N.Y. — Police have released body camera video of officers fatally shooting a man in the city’s 19th Ward.
The video picks up at 7:36 p.m. Thursday as officers as Akintunde Campbell, 38, is seen walking away from them. No audio can be heard for the first 30 seconds of the video.
One officer can be seen grappling in a driveway on Ernestine Street with Campbell, who appeared to be trying to keep one hand in his hoodie pocket.
The officer eventually falls back as Campbell walks away along the sidewalk. Two officers can be seen with guns drawn as the audio turns on and Campbell walks away.
Video shows officers asking Campbell what his name is and what’s in his hand as he walks away. Campbell only responds with, “What do you mean what’s in my hand?” as his hands are in his hoodie pocket.
Officers then order Campbell to “put it down” four times in three seconds before opening fire. Some 11 shots can be heard as Campbell spins and falls to the ground.
The officers continued to order Campbell to put the gun down as they slowly move, eventually grabbing his gun about 1 minute later while radioing for EMS.
The video ends at 7:39 p.m. as other officers arrive and provide medical aid to Campbell.
Police said a 911 call had come in at 5:23 p.m. reporting a suspicious person on Ernestine Street who had walked onto the deck of a house and was wandering door to door.
Another call came in at 7:17 that the man was back and acting suspicious. A call came from Milton Street at 7:26 p.m. reporting the man was trying to get into an occupied car parked in a driveway. A call from Ernestine Street at 7:32 p.m. reported the man was sitting on the hood of a car. Officers arrived four minutes later, according to a release issued Friday by the Rochester Police Department.
