🚨🚨Police body cam video shows moment man slashes machete at officer before getting shot

Jarring police bodycam video released Wednesday shows the moment a man swung a machete at an officer before he was shot by that officer.

The incident happened earlier this month in Athens. The machete-wielding man who was shot has been identified as Salvador Salazar.

Athens-Clarke County Police said on Oct. 5 that officers responded a domestic call and that, after arriving on scene, an officer made contact with Salazar.

“Hey man what are you doing?” he asks as he finds him leaning against a wall at an apartment complex.

As Salazar begins walking toward the officer, the officer says: “Go and get your hands out of your pocket for me. Get your hand out of your pocket right now.”

The officer backs up and says again, “Hey, get your hand out of your pocket.”

“No,” Salazar can be heard saying.

“Get your hand out of your pocket.”

“No.”

“Stop. Stop. Stop right now. Hey man, stop,” the officer commands. “I’m telling you to stop right now.”

After that last command, Salazar can be heard saying something indecipherable, before the officer then appears to lower his weapon and close in to stop him walking away.

As he nears Salazar turns and slashes at the officer.

The rest of the video shows the officer firing at the man three times, appearing to hit him in the upper chest. 11Alive has cut that portion of the video.

After falling, Salazar writhes around and then attempts to stand back up.

“Get on the ground! Get on the ground now!” the officer yells.

Salazar continues to groan and move around on his knees as another officer arrives and the two repeatedly tell him to get rid of his knife and stay on the ground. The video ends with him laying down and officers telling him to bring his arms out to his side.

At the time of the incident, the department said the officer feared for his life and “discharged his service weapon and struck the male in the torso.”

Police said they provided first aid to Salazar until emergency crews arrived to take him to a local hospital.

The officer was placed on leave in line with the department’s standard policy.
