💥💥🚨Intense Shootout Erupts After Officer Confronts Stolen Car Suspects

On July 29, 2025, shortly after 2 p.m., IMPD Officer Renteria ran a license plate check near West 16th and North Harding Streets. The check revealed the vehicle had been stolen in a carjacking the day before, and Officer Renteria began following it. With four men inside, the white carjacked sedan pulled into an apartment complex parking spot at 2100 Emrich Lane. Officer Renteria activated his emergency lights after the carjacked sedan pulled into the parking spot. The driver side rear passenger, 20-year-old Mandrell Ballard, immediately ran from the vehicle. 19-year-old Tyson Reach, exited the rear passenger seat. He initially raised his hands, then walked to the front of the car. Officer Renteria attempted to take the driver, 19-year-old Mahki Starks, into custody and seated him on the ground. As officer Renteria attempted to secure the driver, Reach turned and shot Officer Renteria. Officer Renteria discharged his service weapon, striking Reach. All four subjects ran from the scene. Officer Renteria, who had been shot multiple times, applied a tourniquet to his leg to control the bleeding.

After Reach shot officer Renteria, the officer continued to discharge his service weapon as Reach ran while still holding the firearm. Officer Renteria radioed that he had been shot and that the shooter was down. IMPD officers arrived and found two community members who had run to aid officer Renteria after the shooting. Officer Renteria was transported to the hospital in a patrol car. Reach, who had been shot, fell to the ground in the parking lot a short distance from Officer Renteria. Officers deployed a flashbang, but Reach was unresponsive and his handgun remained within reach. Officers then approached using a ballistic shield. Officers began searching the apartment complex for the other men who ran from the car. They located front passenger Malique Starks on the third floor of an apartment building. A firearm was found near where he surrendered. The driver, Mahki Starks, ran into his residence in the apartment complex. SWAT officers located Mahki Starks and took him into custody. The fourth suspect, Mandrell Ballard, was apprehended by the IMPD violent crimes unit on August 4th.
